S-Curves

Framework summarized by Sam Mishra, MBA (MIT Sloan)

Any technology adoption, as a function of time, usually follows the pattern of a S-curve, as shown below:

The tail of the S-curve depicts the slow rate of technology adoption over a long period of time, and this is known as the ferment stage. After ferment comes the take-off stage of rapid technology adoption in a short period of time, shown above as the middle portion of the S-curve. By the end of the take-off period, the technology has matured, and enters the final stage of over-maturity or slow stagnation, shown here as the head of the S-curve.
